'The first-of-its-kind electric vehicle with three rows of seats' from Hyundai is in production at the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), which had a grand opening in Ellabell, Georgia, on Wednesday. According to a press release from Hyundai Motor Group, the assembly plant and battery production facility in Bryan County will produce up to 500,000 electric and hybrid vehicles annually under the brands Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. One of the vehicles produced at the new plant, located about 20 miles from Savannah, is the IONIQ 9, Hyundai's first three-row SUV. In a photo shared by Hyundai, plant workers are seen working on a green IONIQ 9. 'Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America not only represents the group's advanced capabilities for producing innovative vehicles but also our investment in relationships with partners and communities right here in Georgia,' said Euisun Chung, head of Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai is the third-largest automaker in the world, including Kia Motors, in which it holds a 35% stake, Reuters notes. According to the automaker's website, the IONIQ 9 is expected to hit the roads this spring. Kia's CEO Song Ho-sung stated that Kia vehicles will account for 40% of the total production at the Georgia plant. Initially, the plant was planned to produce 300,000 electric vehicles, but due to the popularity of hybrid vehicles, they were added to the plant's production lineup. Changes were also implemented as part of the $21 billion investment announced by Trump and Chung at an emergency meeting at the White House this week. Trump announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on cars and car parts, which could hurt commercial companies, especially Asian automakers that are among the largest exporters of vehicles to the U.S. After Mexico, South Korea is the second-largest exporter of cars to the United States, followed by Japan, according to S&P. Kia currently produces most of its hybrid vehicles, including the hybrid crossover Sportage, in South Korea. Song said that the new plant in the U.S. will help Kia achieve its goal of increasing U.S. sales to 1.25 million vehicles per year, up from the current 850,000. The plant is an 'intelligent factory', meaning that 'all manufacturing processes - order fulfillment, procurement, logistics, and production - are optimized using artificial intelligence and data. The innovative manufacturing system also helps create a human-centered working environment, with robots assisting workers,' Hyundai noted.
