This spider was first discovered in the early 2000s in the city of Newcastle, located north of Sydney. The discovery was made by Kane Kristensen, a spider researcher.
The Sydney funnel-web spider is considered the most poisonous spider in the world. The male has a spur that protects him from the female's fangs during mating.
These spiders feed on insects, but can also eat frogs and lizards.
The venom of these spiders is as dangerous as that of other species in this family. In the 1980s, an antidote was developed for the bites of these spiders, and since then there have been no fatal cases from their bites.
Recently, Kyiv customs officials prevented the illegal export of stuffed red-listed otters and two owls through postal channels that fall under international conservation conventions.
