Congestion in Northern Europe’s Ports: Waiting Times Increased by 77%
According to a report by maritime consulting firm Drewry, the situation at key maritime gates in Northern Europe has worsened due to congestion. This could lead to an increase in shipping costs on routes to Asia and the USA.
The main reasons are a labor shortage and low water levels in the Rhine River, which hinder barge connections to inland regions. The situation is further complicated by the temporary suspension of 145% tariffs on Chinese imports by U.S. President Donald Trump.
It is noted that delays in the German port of Bremerhaven have increased by 77%, in Antwerp by 37%, and in Hamburg by 49%. Similar trends are also observed in Shenzhen, Los Angeles, and New York.
It is reported that to combat the complexities of freight transport, companies have already announced increases in rates and the introduction of additional fees. American tariffs and threats of further tariffs complicate the situation for Europe’s international partners, raising overall shipping costs.
