Judoka Majdov Disqualified at Olympics Due to Religious Gesture
28-year-old Serbian judoka Nemanja Majdov was disqualified from the 2024 Paris Olympics for crossing himself before a match.
Majdov received a letter from the International Judo Federation (IJF) informing him of his five-month suspension due to the religious gesture.
15 days ago, I received a decision from the International Judo Federation that I was suspended for 5 months. Specifically because I crossed myself entering the Olympic Games. I am banned from participating in all tournaments, training camps, and preparatory gatherings. In truth, in the disciplinary letter, I didn’t want to apologize for crossing myself, although I didn’t even know what the punishment could be. God gave me everything for my career. And I am proud of it. This will not change under any circumstances. It's a pity that a sport like judo has taken to such things.
In another match of the Olympic tournament, judoka Emomali from Tajikistan defeated Shmailov from Israel. After the match, Emomali refused to shake hands with his opponent and shouted "Allah Akbar".
It is also worth noting that in another match, Shmailov refused to shake hands with Bushit from Morocco.
Earlier it was known that Olympic medalist Palchik from Israel might lose his medal due to supporting the army.
