In Botswana, at the Karowe mine, the second largest diamond in the world was found. President Mokgweetsi Masisi personally inspected the discovery. According to the Botswana government, the diamond weighs 2492 carats (498.4 g) and is the second largest in the history of world finds, as well as the largest ever found in the country.
The Canadian company Lucara Diamond, which discovered this valuable stone, called it exceptional and high-quality. Company President William Lamb stated that they are thrilled with this extraordinary discovery. Lamb also mentioned that by using X-ray technology, which the company has been employing since 2017, the enormous diamond was retrieved without damage.
The Botswana government described this discovery as precious. President Masisi has already personally inspected the find and, judging by the photo, it greatly astonished him. Lamb believes that this discovery by the company symbolizes the “ascent of the southern African country as a world leader in diamond production”.
The estimated value of this stone exceeds $40 million, according to sources close to the diamond business.

Note that the diamond found in Botswana is second in size only to the famous “Cullinan”, which was found in South Africa in 1905. The “Cullinan” weighed 3106.75 carats (621.35 g). It was later split, and its largest part, the “Great Star of Africa” diamond, weighing 530.2 carats, adorns the scepter of King Edward VII in the British Tower.
