President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky asked the Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni to act as a mediator in negotiations with the US regarding the transfer of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, reports Messaggero.
According to the publication, Zelensky wants Meloni, who is the chair of the G7 until the end of the year, to influence Washington and achieve the transfer of a significant number of Patriot systems before the presidential elections become too close.
"Zelensky envisioned a mediating role for Rome. He would like Meloni, the chair of the G7 until the end of the year, to push Washington to transfer a significant number of Patriots before the star-spangled elections become too close," writes the publication.
Additionally, Zelensky and Meloni discussed the transfer of a second Samp-T air defense system to Ukraine, which was approved in June but had to be delayed.
"According to the latest information, the shipment of the Samp-T can be expected by the end of September, as Meloni assured Zelensky," the article says.
