ISW: Occupiers have identified the encirclement of Pokrovsk as a key task.

Russian troops continue to show activity in the east of Pokrovsk, indicating their interest in encircling this region. This was reported by RBC Ukraine, referencing a report by the American Institute for the Study of War.
According to analysts, Russian troops began active offensive operations in the east of Pokrovsk as early as December 27. In particular, there is observed advancement of Russian forces northward towards Vodyane-Prugoe and Baranivka. Such actions may indicate an intention to encircle Pokrovsk from the northeast.
'It is reported that Russian units have been regrouping and strengthening their presence in the area for several months. Konstantin Moshovets, a defense expert, stated in late December that the Russian military command is preparing to activate the 41st Army units to the east and northeast of Pokrovsk,' the report states.
Analysts also believe that the Russian command may choose to advance through fields and small settlements, as this would be an easier option than attacking urban and well-fortified settlements on the way to Pokrovsk.
