The head of the Kyiv-Zhytomyr diocese, Vitaliy Kryvytskyi, claims that the war in Ukraine is not a consequence of sins.
He notes that millions of abortions have been performed over the years of independence.
He does not blame God but asserts that God always wishes happiness for people.
'I do not want this to sound as if the war was imposed on us because of our sins. But during the years of independence, 30 million abortions have been performed (unofficial statistics appearing in the media). These 30 million fellow citizens would be very helpful in our times.'
The head of the diocese believes that these citizens could have been soldiers, politicians, or inventors who would help improve defense.
'I give this example because one should not always blame God. God can do everything, but he cannot take away a person's freedom of choice. God has granted people freedom of choice and cannot take it away. We should not look at God as an outside observer. What has happened is the result of our own decisions and actions.'
The head of the diocese emphasizes that God has given people the right to choose.
He explains that conclaves now happen faster because, thanks to media and social networks, people already know about the candidates, and this speeds up the process of choosing a new Pope.
He also notes the support of Pope Francis for Ukraine.
